British Cruise Passenger in ICU as Three Die in Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak at Sea
A British passenger is in intensive care after a suspected hantavirus outbreak on board the MV Hondius left three people dead and several others under medical observation.
The expedition cruise, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, began its journey from Ushuaia on 20 March and is currently anchored off Praia in Cape Verde.
British Passenger in Critical Condition
Health officials confirmed that a 69-year-old British man is the only laboratory-confirmed case so far. He was evacuated earlier and is now receiving intensive treatment in Johannesburg. His condition remains serious.
Three Deaths and More Suspected Cases
According to the World Health Organization, three people have died in connection with the suspected outbreak. At least five additional cases are currently under investigation, though they have not yet been confirmed.
Two crew members onboard are also reportedly ill and in need of urgent medical care, but authorities have not yet allowed them to disembark in Cape Verde.
Passengers Not Allowed to Disembark
Cape Verdean health authorities have denied permission for passengers to leave the ship, citing concerns about protecting the local population. As a result, the vessel has remained offshore while officials continue to assess the risk.
What Is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially deadly disease usually spread through contact with infected rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. In severe cases, it can lead to serious lung complications and even death.
There is currently no specific cure or vaccine. Medical experts say treatment focuses on supportive care, including oxygen therapy and intensive monitoring.
Experts Say Outbreak Is Unusual
Health specialists have described the situation as highly unusual. Hantavirus is not commonly transmitted between people, and outbreaks on cruise ships are extremely rare.
Experts believe those infected may have been exposed before boarding due to the virus’s incubation period, which can range from one to eight weeks.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities and the cruise operator are continuing investigations to determine how the outbreak began and whether all cases are connected. With the incubation period still ongoing, more cases could emerge in the coming days.
The MV Hondius was carrying around 150 passengers, along with crew and staff, during its voyage. Efforts are now focused on providing medical support and preventing further spread of the illness.
